EA8 – Canary Islands

Rent-a-QTH:

Bill, EA8AZC has a nice house in a quiet part of the island for rent.  On the North-East side of the island on a hill overlooking the ocean.  The very nice house can support 2 adults and 2 children.  Includes full kitchen, small pool, small weight room, great views from the deck, and satellite TV (German TV only).  In Summer of 2001, the price quoted for rental was 325 EURO (about 283 USD) per week (very cheap!) including everything: bedding, towels, bath towels, bath robe the works (fully equipped kitchen etc)

Bill only uses a low power (barefoot) station with basic ham equipment (Kenwood 570D and IC-706 with added DSP filter).
New Spider Beam antenna.  There is no linear at the shack.  An obstacle with high power would be these crazy Spanish TV-afflicted neighbors of mine with TV sets that don't have TVI protection. Although we live in the country, high power transmission (in case you want to bring your own linear) will reach far enough causing unwanted trouble.  Also available a Barker & Williamson (military) broadband dipole which works very well indeed.

Shack: TS570D, IC 706, Tribander, and wires.  Computer and Internet access provided.

Superb studio apartments located on the edge of Costa Teguise. Privately run by a French couple who speak fluent English and Spanish, very friendly, with swimming pool and on-site restaurant. The roof of the apartments gives clear take-off in all directions for RF and are about 30 feet AGL. There are BBQ chimneys on the roof about 8 feet tall to which a dipole can be attached. Each room has a safe big enough for a PSU and HF rig. When booking it is necessary to ask for a top floor apartment as the ground floor ones are unsuitable for putting up any sort of antenna.

Top floor apartments have accessible roof space where it is possible to erect dipoles for the higher HF bands or a vertical (there is room to lay out radials of about 10 feet in length). You will need coaxial feeder to be at least 25 feet long as there are no electrical power outlets on the roof and the TX/RX needs to be located in the living area. My XYL and myself got this apartment as a late deal and it would normally have to be booked for 4-6 people sharing, making the full price much more than what we paid (£250 each for 1 week). There is satellite and terrestrial TV's in the complex so TVI may be a problem. This is a quiet and very pleasant location.
