Rent-a-QTH
Bungalow on the north coast
of Dominican Republic, 1.5 Km from Las Terrenas/Samana. (a
town with restaurants, shopping facilities, pharmacy, doctors, car and
motor-bike hire services) , on the north coast of the peninsula Samana in the Dominican Republic.
Bungalow approximately 300-350m from the ocean can hold up to 6 persons; 3 double rooms each with shower or bath; kitchen, atrium, fully stocked kitchen. The bungalow (total floor space 200m˛) is located in a private site of about 1000m2 in a treed/shady housing estate with a family flair. This means you are quite a bit away from your neighbors. As this is a purely residential area, your holiday will not be disturbed by the sound of loud music around the clock or by rather tipsy fellow holidaymakers as is often the case in All Inclusive Clubs.
It is about a 5 minute walk (300 m) to PLAYA PUNTA BONITA, which is said to be the peninsula most beautiful beach. The beach stands out due to its fine sands and its shallow water near the shore (suitable for children), palm trees, which provide shade and few tourists. On the beach, there are several small restaurants and three small hotels. In the adjacent quiet bays, which are reached by walking along the beach, you can often enjoy listening to the sound of the waves and the wind blowing through the palm-trees completely on your own. Despite this solitude, various activities can be arranged e.g. skin-diving, riding, jet-ski organized tours etc.
We offer a
generously planned bungalow. It is a hexagonal house with
covered atrium (approximately 39m2 in size) in the middle. A covered, shady terrace with garden furniture
and reclining chairs is attached to the outside of the house. On one of the
side walls there is also an outdoor shower.
The water-supply comes from a private well.
The rooms consists of:
- 1 large double bedroom
(approx. 20m2) with its own bathroom (approx. 9 m2) with
a bath, a separate shower, wash-hand basin and toilet.
- 2 double bedrooms (each approx. 16m2) and each with
its own shower room with wash-hand basin and toilet.
- 1 fully equipped kitchen
(approx. 10m2) with gas-stove and a large electric fridge and sink.
- 1 dining area (approx. 21m2)
next to the kitchen with an exit to the terrace (22m˛)
Shack:
We are connected to the public electricity system of
Las Terrenas. The voltage is 110-120
V/60Hz (the shack also has 220V/60Hz
for amplifiers) The electric outlets
are American Standard with flat contacts. The electric outlets for 220 Volt are
European standard (Schuko).
- Crank up tower (17m high) with 7 element log periodic antenna (LP7/Titanex; for all the radio-amateur-frequencies from 30m to 10m), and a rotary dipole for 40m-Band.
- FD-4-Windom-antenna (2KW-version) hooked on two palm-trees
- 1
Radio ham shack (approx. 7m2) (equipped with a work top, power
supply (110V/14V-20A/22A), car battery for emergency power supply
(+Power-Manager). In case of
power-cuts or short voltage drops by the public electricity the (home-made)
“power-manager” guarantees the immediate switch-over to the stand-by battery
(only for the transceiver!), and it also charges the battery (if necessary)
during transmission pauses, when listening or when the transceiver is not
working under full-load conditions). Two indicators on the power-manager
display the output voltage and current.
-
MFJ-300W-antenna-tuner
with dummy load, and coax switch (one connector free; possible to
connect your own antenna)
-
So you only
have to take your own transceiver or amplifier with you! Rig & amp are not provided.
There is a suitable
safe (lock box) for the transceiver in the shack. Additional
there is another smaller safe for normal use.

Ham Friendly Hotel: El Colibri Hotel, Sosua (near Puerto Plata) www.elcolibri.net
Following submitted by Bruce KI7VR who visited on Feb 1, 2004
Room 104 is the best for radio/antennas (big tree outside). Rooms 103 and
105 also OK. There is easy roof access & from the roof I pushed up 2
inverted vees (for 20m and 17m) in the tree, using a 20 ft fiberglass
telescoping pole. Hotel cost me $25
/night very nice pool and grounds. Owned /operated by nice Dutch people.
This hotel is in Sosua a resort
town near to the airport for Puerto Plata. The hotel
has a nice garden & pool and a flat roof with attachment points for
antennas. Room 104 is best because it has a big tree in front which I used for
my 20m and 17m dipoles. Rooms 103 and 105 also would be fine. The hotel has a
generator which is important because of frequent power outages in D.R. The
generator is well suppressed & creates no radio noise (at least none on 20m
and 17m). There was some grid noise from the town when the local power system
was up & running (about half the time)but I still I operated OK. It was
fabulously quiet when the grid power went out & the generator kicked in !!
They have dish TV in the rooms -- my 100W from room 105 evidently caused no
trouble to my neighbors watching TV in room 104.
Hotel rates are reasonable -- about US $25/day in 2004. Monique,
the manager & husband are very friendly & nice. They speak
perfect english, also Dutch.
