KP1 - Navassa Island

Dream on! This is a deserted island now run by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and currently they aren't allowing anyone on the island (see letter below) - believe me, a lot of seasoned DXpeditioners have tried to open this one in the past few years. Even if it was open to visitors, THE LANDING IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. This would be a hard-core DXpedition location for seasoned DXpeditioners only.

But just to wet your appetite, here is a neat site about the island: http://www.nybg.org/bsci/hcol/navassa/

Thank you for your interest in Navassa Island National Wildlife Refuge. In April 1999, Navassa Island and its surrounding waters became part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, a network of lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Navassa is quite unique because the refuge was established to help facilitate implementation of President Clinton's coral reef protection initiative, signed in June 1998.

Due to the sensitive nature of the island and its associated coral reef habitat, it has been determined that the refuge should be closed to all recreational use pending additional study. Moreover, use of Navassa Island for amateur radio would not be an appropriate use as defined by recent congressional legislation governing the refuge system, i.e., The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997. Therefore, your request for access to Navassa Island will have to be denied.

During the past several months, I have been contacted by other radio operators wanting access to Navassa Island. I provided them with the same information that I have given to you. Feel free to call me at (787) 851-7258 if you need any additional information or clarification.

Sincerely,
