VYI - Yukon Territory

Club Station: VY1RAC / VY1DX Yukon Amateur Radio Association club members or guest operators may use VY1RAC or VY1DX (club callsign) from time to time during contests. The station is situated 3 miles from Whitehorse on the slopes of Canyon (Grey) Mountain. It is in a 40' mobile home (heated!) with mains power (backup generator being installed Sept. 26, 1999). Antennas are TH6DXX at 60', 40m delta loop, and 80m inverted-V. Rig is FT767

We now have an electric stove for cooking. The current plans are to complete the interior renovations, install beds, upgrade / add antennas and install additional radio equipment as it becomes available.

This site does NOT have running water (bring your own) and toilet facilities are, in true Yukon style - outhouses.

If you wish to use the VY1DX station for contesting, please let Ron (VY1RM) know.

Visit the club web page at: http://www.yara.yk.ca/contest.html

Some input from Andy, AE6Y who visited on 01/10/99

I visited VY1DX in October 1999 to activate VY1 for the California QSO Party, and just wanted to add a few words.  First, it's a very nice installation, in a heated trailer with a nice operating position.  The outhouse is fine, and the site is just a few minutes from Whitehorse, a town of 20,000 or so people with all amenities available.  We were treated very kindly by Ron, VY1RM, the station host at the time, “J”, VY1JA, who even lent us his amp when the station one didn't work, and other visitors, including Bob, VY1MB, whom we got interested in HF contesting so that he now shows up in SS.

The only concern about this site is the (band) conditions, due to the high latitude.  We had a beautiful auroral display that wiped out 40 and 80m. In all other respects, it is a fine place with very hospitable hosts and wonderful scenery.

Camping only, no hydro (generator). VERY remote location. During the last 4 years Team Zone-2 has operated from this location. Easy drive, all paved roads.  The Municipalite of Baie James is very happy to have Radio Amateurs set up on their sites.

CQWW SSB, WX is below freezing temperatures at night warm in the day (55 max), 0- 4 inches of snow from year to year.
Last year VB2R operated M/M HP using 2-10KW generators, set up in campers. Site is on a remote lake. KM 80 on the James Bay hwy, Lac Ouescapis. Out house, and garbage bins are supplied. No cost for use of this facility.
Be very careful of Bears, lots of Bears.
