FK – New Caledonia

Ham Friendly Hotel in Noumea

The following information comes from Johnny, LA5IIA about the TX8G operation

The only hotel in Noumea that would accept antennas on the roof is:

Le Mocambo S.A.   (English: Mocambo Hotel)
Baie des Citrons
B.P.678
98845 Noumea Cedex
phone: +687 262701,  fax: +687 263877

It's not a five-star hotel, but quite good standard with satellite TV, air-condition and room service. It's clean and nice......The "top-suite" is perfect for setting up radio-station(s), as it consists of two separate rooms, and 270 degrees flat balcony with proper space to erect antennas.  Nice take-off towards the bay, as well. And it’s 100m from the beach. New Caledonia is expensive (even for a Norwegian - HI!), and most people do not talk English. And the French tourists simply LOVE to sing karaoke in the nights. The bar downstairs might then be a problem with it's wireless microphone arrangement. I had to stop working EU on 12m CW one night to avoid destroying the totally miserable French singing...! Anyway: the hotel manager - who asked me kindly to take a brake - showed great understanding for my activity during the entire stay.

Hotel Mocambo in Noumea has a great take-off towards EU, USA and JA. The bay is bending somewhat E-W, makes it perfect for putting out FK on the air. It's only a 4-floor building, but sure does the job.  I worked with a IC-775DSP and FL-2100 (500w) and R7 and HV-2 verticals for 80-10 mtrs. Had S9+20 signals in all directions! You know, close to the sea, some meters above the ground, and close to equator.....you don't need stacked monobanders 50 mtrs up or 1.5 kw (FK has 500w limit!!) BUT: being close to equator also means you will have periods with silence on the bands, as well as long periods with just 1-2 bands open. This means that M/M operations will have to consider the efficiency of bringing too much equipment.
